Welcome from the Principal
Welcome to St. Mary's College: we are a thriving community which places a high value on outstanding academic achievement and all-round personal development, as well as our central emphasis as a Catholic school which welcomes boys and girls of all faiths.
Our school is built on strong values which emphasise the importance of caring for others and striving for excellence in all we do. At St. Mary’s our pupils are challenged to achieve, taught a sense of what is right, encouraged to show initiative, nurtured in spiritual growth and shown the importance of teamwork. Our rich programme of extra-curricular activities equips our pupils with the skills and values which will guide and support them throughout their lives.
We hope that you find this site informative and will be sufficiently attracted by its contents to come and visit us for a taste of life at St. Mary's: visitors remark upon the special atmosphere at our school and the warm welcome offered by our pupils and staff.
The A-Level and GCSE results in 2011 were extremely pleasing. Notable achievements have been:
At A-Level: Five members of Upper Sixth achieved 3 or more A*/A grades each. Congratulations to Hannah Cooke, Lucy Houghton, Jessica Hudson, Alice Mackay and Katherine Orme for reaching this very high benchmark. (Alice and Katherine will now progress to Liverpool and Edinburgh respectively to read Medicine). The overall pass rate was 97% with 62% of the passes being at grades A and B, representing an improvement on last year.
At GCSE, 32 members of Year 11 (well over a third [38%] of the cohort) achieved seven A*/A grades each or better; Emily Anderson, Katherine Ashcroft, Christopher Bartolo, Daniel Bean, Benjamin Blackburn, Nicholas Brown, Adam Bruchez, Alastair Cawdron, Ruth Cawdron, Anna Foat, Lawrence Gillam, Hannah Greenway, Olivia Hammerton, Nicholas Hicks, Ryan Hodge, David Hughes, David Jones, Adele Kletz, William McKeand, Patrick McKenna, Shona McMullen, Thomas Owens, Alexander Poole, Patrick Power, Philip Robinson, Megan Scott, Rebecca Sharkey, Helen Tickle, Lucy Tobin, David Vose, Brady Williams and Matthew Wynne. 98% of our GCSE candidates achieved 5 or more grades A* - C each with 42% of all the grades being at A or A*. Congratulations to the pupils, their teachers and parents for their hard work and support.
Success at St. Mary's is measured by much more than examination results: achievement encompasses music, sport, initiatives for others as well as the spiritual growth of all members of our community. I invite you to visit us and experience for yourself the essence of St. Mary's.
