Year 10 Pupils go to Court!
10 year 10 students from St Mary's were invited to a special event at Liverpool Youth Courts to celebrate 100 years of the Youth Court system.
They enjoyed a tour of the court buildings and learnt about how Forensics help the police to catch criminals more effectively, and then were present at two mock trials, one conducted under the 1909 system and a second one which showed the workings of a modern Youth trial.
Year 10 student, Jack Howard Murphy, said "It was a very interesting visit and we learnt a great deal about how attitudes to young people who commit crimes have changed over the last century. In 1909, even quite young children could be birched or sent to prison. Now every effort is made to steer young offenders away from a lifetime in crime."
