World Book Day Celebrations
St. Mary’s College students looked at the way a novel moves from page to sound stage as part of World Book Day celebrations at the school this week. Year 7 pupils, who have been reading The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by CS Lewis, were given the opportunity to compare the printed and film versions of the Chronicles of Narnia classic.
The whole year group attended a special screening of the movie which staff had arranged at the Plaza Community Cinema in Waterloo. The fantasy novel - the third in the Narnia series - was originally published in 1952 by the acclaimed writer whose work has been translated into more than 30 languages. The 20th Century Fox film - described as an ‘epic adventure’ - was released late last year and has proved popular with audiences, despite receiving mixed reviews from the critics.
St. Mary’s College Librarian, Cath Howard, commented: “The school is always an enthusiastic supporter of initiatives like World Book Day which help to generate even more enthusiasm for books and reading amongst our pupils. “I’ve had some very positive feedback from Year 7 on the Plaza visit. As well as being an enjoyable film, it was an opportunity for pupils to reflect on what is gained and what is lost when novels make the transition from the printed page to the big screen.”
