Students Brew Up to Raise Money for African Charity
Students at St Mary’s College in Crosby have been brewing up to help a very good cause in east Africa.
Sixth formers served tea, coffee and a range of homemade cakes and biscuits to teachers and other staff to raise £100 for the St Maria Goretti Project in Tanzania.
Former St Mary’s religious studies teacher Claire Ball, who is involved with the project, also attended the Coffee and Cakes event.
She told students that a new religious society, the St Maria Goretti Sisters, is raising cash to build a 25-bed hostel to help girls and young women who are living in distressed situations.
They may be homeless, abused or subjected to various forms of domestic and social violence including forced marriages and slavery. Some are even the victims of abuse linked to witchcraft.
Claire explained that the hostel will help victims to recover physically, mentally and spiritually from these situations, and to build new, fulfilled lives.
St Mary’s Principal, Mike Kennedy, commented: “We were delighted to welcome Claire back to the school and to hear about the project’s exciting plans for the new hostel.
“Our students are always quick to support a good cause, and the money they have raised will help to create much-needed accommodation and training facilities to help these young Tanzanian women recover from their suffering.”
