St. Mary's welcomes Macbeth!
Pupils studying Shakespeare’s Macbeth at St. Mary’s College in Crosby have received a helping hand from one of the country’s leading actors.
David Morrissey visited the school to talk to students about his recent experience of playing the title role in ‘the Scottish play’ at Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre.
David has starred in hit films and TV shows like Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Hilary and Jackie, Nowhere Boy, Dr Who and South Riding.
He has an ongoing relationship with St. Mary’s as his sister, Karen Lane, is the college’s Head of Lower School.
During his visit David talked to students about his detailed preparations for tackling Macbeth. These included creating an extensive back story for the character, as he does for all of the roles he plays.
The actor also took part in a question-and-answer session with students and was interviewed for the school magazine by budding journalists, including his nephew Stephen Lane.
St. Mary’s College Principal, Mike Kennedy, said: “We are very grateful to David for finding time to visit the school. Our students were thrilled to meet him and gained a lot from the experience.
“It was very useful for them to hear from someone who has played Macbeth about the complexities of the character, and the challenges of presenting the play to a modern audience.”
