St. Mary's aims to be Fairtrade School
Students at St Mary’s in Crosby are working hard to make the college a Fairtrade School.
They have formed a special group to organise events and raise awareness of Fairtrade issues amongst pupils and staff. Through links with the Oxfam shops in Crosby and Formby group members have been selling a selection of Fairtrade chocolate during Fairtrade Fortnight. And members also arranged with Catering Manager Tracy Gogerty for Ben and Jerry’s Fairtrade ice cream to be on sale in the canteen during this period. The group is being supported by Teacher Mrs Chris Hearty who commented: ‘These initiatives follow a number of school assemblies which have explained the Fairtrade ethos and encouraged pupils to try the products for themselves. ‘The message we have been trying to get across is that small changes can make a big difference in the long term. ‘For example, we’d like every pupil to change to Fairtrade chocolate. By doing so they will be helping to encourage fair terms of trade and decent working conditions for farmers and workers.’
