Rugby Victory!
Rowlands and Bristow lay the foundations for Lancashire Plate victory!
St. Mary's produced a powerful display of rugby against a strong Arnold School to progress to the next round of the Lancashire Plate. Much of the victory owed to the forward effort where, despite not being first choice players until Year 9 and 10 respectively, Jonathan Rowlands and Sam Bristow took the Arnold scrum apart to set up victory. Both players are invaluable to the St. Mary's effort. Captain Carruthers once again led by example and Daniel Frost proved once again why he has caught the eye of the Lancashire Under 17 Selectors.
St. Mary's took the lead through Sean Marren who supported well from flanker to score a superb try after the backs had moved the ball one side of the field to the other. There was no more score in the first half and in the second period Arnold came back into the match. They scored through a penalty to narrow the gap 5-3 and missed a straight forward penalty straight after which would have seen them take the lead. This spurred St. Mary's and they never looked back. Oliver Gallagher and Ben Rath kicked the corners to ensure St. Mary's spent much of the last ten minutes in the Arnold 22. On the last play of the match, Arnold went for broke. George Lightfoot charged down the chip kick and fell on the ball to score a vital try on debut for the under 16s. The final whistle blew and St.Mary's had earned a deserved victory 10-3. Congratulations to all
