Junior Maths Challenge Success
Pupils at St Mary’s College achieved 2 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze awards in this year’s UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Over 235,000 pupils from across the UK sat the Junior Maths Challenge with roughly the top 6% receiving a gold certificate, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze.
Gold awards were presented to Isabelle Bond in year 8 and Oliver McDonald in year 7.
The Junior Maths Challenge is run by the UK Mathematics Trust and aimed at those in Years 7 and 8 and is sat in schools.

The world’s largest coin, made by the Royal Mint of Canada, was auctioned in
June 2010. The coin has mass 100 kg, whereas a standard British £1 coin has mass 10 g. What sum of money in £1 coins would weigh the same as the record-breaking coin?
The pupils in Year 8 are holding a mock election. A candidate receiving more votes than any other wins. The four candidates receive 83 votes between them. What is the smallest number of votes the winner could receive?
