Coffee and cakes raise money for cancer charity
Sweet-toothed staff and students at St Mary’s College in Crosby have been helping to raise cash for a very good cause.
The proceeds of the latest ‘coffee and cakes’ event at the school have been donated to sixth former Abigail Bradbury’s drive to raise funds for research into cervical cancer, and to support women who have been affected by the disease.
Abigail and other sixth formers brewed up and served morning coffee, tea and a selection of homemade cakes and biscuits to teachers, support staff and pupils, raising £130 for the appeal.
Abigail will add this to the proceeds of her other fundraising initiatives - which have included a sponsored silence and a guess the number of sweets in a jar game - in a bid to raise a very significant sum for cancer charities.
St Mary’s College Principal, Mike Kennedy, commented: “These ‘coffee and cakes’ events have now become a regular feature of the school calendar, and they are proving increasingly popular.
“Over the past year they have helped to raise funds for everything from mission work in Africa to increasing awareness of the serious food allergy, coeliac disease.
“I would like to congratulate Abigail on all her efforts for cervical cancer sufferers. Our students have an excellent track record in supporting charities, and she is another excellent example of a young person who is determined to make a difference by helping others.”
Around 2,900 women in the UK are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Although it is the eleventh most common cancer in women overall, it is the second most common in women under 35 years old.

Sweet success for Abigail Bradbury (seated) and sixth formers (from left) Claire Cooke, Alex Norman-Jones, Harriet Halpin and Roisin McKean.
