Dalitso and Ellen take up leading College rolesSt. Mary’s College in Crosby has appointed two local students to the key roles of Head Boy and Head Girl for this school year. Head Girl Ellen Thomas from Blundellsands is studying Maths, Sciences and French at A Level and plans to read Medicine at university next year. As well as being an accomplished singer and musician she is Joint Chair of the School’s Student Council, plays hockey to county and regional standard and is involved in regular voluntary work at Crosby’s Nazareth House. Head Boy Dalitso Mwandumba from Waterloo is taking Maths and Sciences at A Level and is another aspiring doctor. He is also a talented musician and sportsman, playing saxophone for the St. Mary’s Stage Band and Concert Band and representing the school at both rugby and cricket. He is a volunteer at Aintree Hospital and looks after the school’s tutor links programme. Ellen commented: “I am delighted to have been selected for this important role and I can’t wait to get further involved in things.” Dalitso added: “I am very proud to be Head Boy and look forward to making a positive contribution to the school.” Choosing a Head Boy and Head Girl is a very in-depth process at St. Mary’s College. Initially staff nominate around 30 pupils who they feel should be considered for the roles. Then staff and sixth formers are invited to cast their votes to produce a shortlist of eight. The final selection is then made on the basis of interviews with these candidates conducted by a panel headed up by Principal Michael Kennedy. Mr Kennedy commented: “When we choose our Head Boy and Head Girl we look for a wide range of personal skills and a proven track record of service to the college and the wider community. “Dalitso and Ellen have these qualities in abundance. They are full of initiative and endeavour and we are very fortunate to have them in these important roles.”
