The traditional rugby-playing school landed its first-ever major football honour when its year 9 team drew with Birkdale High in the final of the Sefton Cup. The two schools will share the trophy, keeping it for six months each. St Mary’s has also won its first borough-wide badminton trophy, topping the second division of the Sefton under 19 league. This has also guaranteed promotion to the first division of the competition next term. Meanwhile, the college’s under 15 cricketers have also been getting in on the act by reaching finals day of the Lancashire schools competition for the first time. St Mary’s eventually finished third in the event, a very creditable result bearing in mind that 84 schools originally entered the competition. School spokesman Trevor Lane said: “St Mary’s has an excellent track record in a wide variety of sports but it is always pleasing when our pupils add to this impressive list of achievements.”
