SMOBs to the rescue in 1st XV success
With Blundell Park waterlogged, St. Mary's 1st XV and 2nd XV entertained St. Anselm's at the St. Mary's Old Boys pitches at Gorsey Lane. Having approached the Old Boys midweek about the possibility of borrowing their fields, we would like to thank them for their help. Without them the boys would once again have suffered another cancelled game.
This was the first time in recent years that the 1st XV have played against St Anselm's 1st XV as they have simply been too strong for us. Two years ago we played against their 2nd XV and won by eight points.
However, the transformation of the senior rugby has been immense. Under coach Deventer and captain Manley St. Mary's played some of their best rugby in years. The first half in particular was immense as the forwards exerted their authority over a bigger pack, turning over ball in the loose and dominating the set piece.
The first try came from Michael Turnock who was oustanding throughout. Alex Norman Jones played his best game and was rewarded for his powerful display with a try. Danny Frost carried well and also scored, as did Sean Marren and top try scorer Nicholas Carter.
The platform for the victory was undoubtedly laid by the strongest front five the school has had in recent years. Manley, Bonner, Christophorou, Turnock and Frost have been outstanding all year.
This victory and indeed the whole season so far is particularly pleasing for the present Upper sixth form (Dimitri Christophorou, Tom Manley, Michael Turnock, Musab Lafi, Adam Caffrey and Jacob Allen). They have endured some difficult days in their seven years rugby at the College so to end on such a high is great reward for their services.
Elsewhere, St. Mary's lost a tight game in the 2nd XV 13-5, were beaten 33-0 in the under 14s and lost at under 12 and under 13 level to strong teams from Birkenhead and St. Anselm's.
However, the under 14s were outstanding and tries from Ben Swift and Joe Campbell earned them a hard fought 12-10 win. Well done to all the boys and once again thanks to the Old Boys for the loan of their pitches, in particular Tony Dever who was instrumental in organizing the fixture to be held their.
