Low Carbon Day
St Mary’s College in
The college recently took part in Schools Low Carbon Day which put the spotlight on ways that pupils and their families can reduce their impact on the environment.
1,500 schools across the country, with almost 600,000 pupils in total, were involved in the campaign which was organised by Cool the World, a voluntary organisation formed by a group of parents.
St Mary’s Head of Science, Bob Johnston, commented: “The aim of this event was to set aside a day to teach children about the importance of energy conservation and climate change.
“As part of this exercise, we also asked staff, students and their families to pledge to do something to reduce their carbon emissions.”
On Low Carbon Day people were asked to walk or cycle to St Mary’s, rather than arriving by car. The lights and computers at the school were used as little as possible, and only cold food was available at lunchtime.
In addition, pupils were encouraged to have an ‘earth hour’ when they returned home, trying not to switch anything on or use any energy for at least 60 minutes.
“We were delighted at the response to this event,” said Bob Johnston. “It was a very useful way of highlighting the practical steps that we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint.”
