Lower School: Years 7-9
(Key Stage 3, Ages 11 - 14 )
The provision is 'National Curriculum plus'. The full range of National Curriculum subjects, Core and Foundation, is enhanced by the provision of the three separate sciences, a second foreign language, and Classics. Pupils experience all the major forms of knowledge. An appreciation of the value and uniqueness of individual subject disciplines makes possible informed choices when the Curriculum narrows for GCSE. On entry at 11 girls and boys are placed in four unstreamed forms of approximately 25 pupils. Each form follows a common course of:
ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS, FOREIGN LANGUAGE, HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, RE, ART, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, MUSIC, PE & GAMES.
For the Foreign Language two forms study French and two Spanish. In Music all children attempt an orchestral instrument in the First Year and tuition is provided free as part of the Curriculum. In the Second Year Classics is introduced and Mathematics is taught in sets according to performance at the end of the First Year. In the Third Year virtually all pupils start a second Foreign Language in addition to the first. All pupils have the opportunity to develop their use of Information Technology as a cross-curricular skill. The College's EPR programme provides moral, social, and health education. During the Third Year a process of advice and parental consultation informs choices for GCSE courses to follow. Pupils are encouraged to make choices which leave all the major career pathways open.
