St Mary's College in Crosby is celebrating a string of individual sporting successes by its students.

Five pupils have been blazing a trail in sports as diverse as golf and trampolining, including 16-year-old cricketer Gavin Griffiths who has been chosen as a member of the development group from which the England team will be picked for his age group.

Gavin - who already plays for Ormskirk's first eleven - has also represented Lancashire and the North of England.  A talented all-rounder, he also plays rugby for the county.

In football, 13-year-old ace striker George Newell has been signed by the Everton Academy.  He will be following in the footsteps of his father, Mike Newell, the former Goodison favourite and Luton manager.

In trampolining, 13-year-old Laura McLaughlin is through to the finals of the British Schools Championship in Bristol in March after successes in the North West heat in Manchester and the northern finals in Hull.

Laura was under 13 joint champion in this event last year and is now aiming to make her mark at under 15 level.

Meanwhile, two students have been achieving remarkable success out on the golf course. 14-year-old James Rooney and Lucinda Burdett, aged 15, both represent Lancashire at junior level and now have single-figure handicaps.

Lucinda is also Lancashire girls champion, Clitheroe junior champion and Wirral ladies junior champion.  Another all-rounder, she also represents the school at netball, hockey, rounders and athletics.

St Mary's Principal, Mike Kennedy, commented: "I would like to congratulate all these students on their achievements which are the result both of talent and years of hard work.

"Their success, and the achievements of other individual pupils and a number of our school teams, are helping to make this a sporting year to remember."
