GCSE Mathematics
Mathematics is a central core subject and is studied by all pupils.
The department uses AQA modular specification for all pupils with two tiers of entry, Higher and Foundation. The level of entry does not need to be determined at the outset of the course but we would assume, at this stage, that all students will study for the Higher Level GCSE. This will be reviewed in consultation with parents during the course if it seems necessary. There is no coursework element to the course.
We aim to enable pupils to demonstrate their full potential by promoting:
- Imaginative and innovative styles of teaching incorporating the use of ICT.
- Courses that are enjoyable for all pupils regardless of ability.
- An appreciation of the interdependence of the different branches of Mathematics.
- An ability to use Maths in different situations.
- An appreciation of the place of Maths in society.
-
Module 1: Statistics and Number is worth 26.7% of the final mark.
-
Module 2: Number and Algebra is worth 33.3% of the final mark.
-
Module 3: Geometry and Algebra is worth 40% of the final mark
Calculators are allowed in Modules 1 and 3 but not in Module 2.
Teaching for Module 1 begins after Easter in Year 9 to enable pupils to sit the first exam in November of Year 10, whilst pupils will sit Module 2 in June of Year 10 and Module 3 in June of Year 11.
Teaching is supported by specific AQA resources and our yearly subscription to MyMaths.co.uk, an online resource which has worksheets for every topic as well as revision packs for pupils to use to support revision. The Department puts great emphasis on the use of past paper questions for consolidation of each module.
