GCSE History

In History you will study many of the key events of the last 100 years of British and World History; not only are the topics interesting but they will help you to make sense of our modern world.

We begin by looking at Great Britain in the early years of the 20th century - the grinding poverty of daily life and the efforts by governments to improve matters. We look at the struggle of women to get the vote and the effect of World War one on the Home Front with rationing, Zeppelin raids and the like.

We then cover aspects of World History from 1918 - 1945. A broad span approach takes us through the 1920s, the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party and the causes of another World War in 1939. A depth study looks at the USA in the same period - a time of gangsters such as Al Capone, the early years of Hollywood, the racial intolerance of the Ku Klux Klan, the disastrous Wall Street Crash and the New Deal of President Roosevelt.

By contrast, the Coursework focuses on Russia between the wars with the execution of Tsar Nicholas XI, the Russian Revolution of Lenin and the Communist party and the rule of fear by Stalin in the 1930s.

You will further develop skills you have already encountered in earlier years - the ability to analyse original sources, the ability to construct arguments and put forward your own point of view. These are skills that are important in all walks of life.

You will study the topic via a huge variety of media - not just the written word and pictures but also film, computer simulations and lots more.

There is also the opportunity to take part in the biennial History trip; our next one, hopefully, will be a return to Washington and New York.
