GCSE Geography

Pupils who wish to establish a broad and balanced curriculum at key stage 4 should consider the unique value of Geography as a subject for study in any option scheme since the subject forms an ideal bridge between the Arts and Sciences.

Geographical education exists to help young people place themselves in a world which is changing very quickly and make greater sense of it.  Geography has a very important contribution to make with regard to promoting knowledge and understanding of the big issues which any education for the twenty-first century must address - the attainment of greater equity and justice in a world where there is a great imbalance in wealth and opportunity, the development of policies which will hopefully ensure the sustainability of the planet for future generations, the increasing importance of the understanding of and management of the consequences of natural hazards in the environment, understanding the growing importance of the interdependence between nations and the impact of globalisation on people throughout the world.

At GCSE the course followed is AQA Specification B.

The modular course is structured as follows:-

In Year 10 pupils study for:

Unit 1: Managing Places in the 21st Century (25% GCSE)

Unit 2: Hostile World (25% GCSE)

In Year 11 pupils study for:

Unit 3: Investigating the Shrinking World (25% GCSE)

Unit 4 is known as ‘Controlled Assessment' (i.e. under direct supervision).

This will comprise of a locally based fieldwork investigation (worth 15% of the final mark) and a Geographical issue Investigation (worth 10% of the final mark).  AQA decides "the titles" that can be studied in any one year and they will change from year to year.

Pupils opting to take the subject will join an energetic, hard working, determined and successful department which is fully committed to bringing the best out of each individual in a classroom environment which is both stimulating and challenging and which will, hopefully, encourage the pursuit of excellence beyond the classroom too.
