These two courses follow a brand new specification from AQA, designed to provide wider choices and flexibility for pupils and staff alike. The courses are skills-based and ensure enjoyment and engagement in both subjects.

Unit 1

Understanding and Producing Non-Fiction Texts

External examination - 2 hours

80 marks (40% of total GCSE)

Section A assesses Reading skills

Section B assesses Writing skills

Unit 2

Speaking and Listening

Controlled assessment

45 marks (20% of total GCSE)

 

Unit 3

Understanding Spoken and Written Texts and Writing Creatively

 

Controlled Assessment

80 marks (40% of total GCSE)

Completed in curriculum time.

Part a: Extended reading

Part b: Creative Writing

Part c: Spoken Language Study

 

English Literature

Unit 1 Compulsory

Exploring Modern Texts

External examination - 1 hour 30 mins.

60 marks (40 % of total GCSE)

Section A: Modern Prose or Drama

Section B: Exploring Cultures

Candidates have a choice in following:

Either Units 2 and 3

Or Units 4 and 5

 

Unit 2

Poetry Across Time

External Examination - 1 hour 15 mins.

54 marks (35% of total GCSE)

Section A: Poetry Cluster from the Anthology

Section B: Responding to unseen poem

 

Unit 3

The Significance of Shakespeare and the English Literary Heritage

Controlled Assessment:

40 marks (25% of total GCSE)

Completed in curriculum time

 

OR

 

Unit 4

Approaching Shakespeare and the Literary Heritage

External examination - 1 hour 15 mins.

54 marks (35% of total GCSE)

Section A: Shakespeare

Section B: Prose from the Literary Heritage

 

Unit 5

Exploring Poetry

Controlled Assessment:

40 marks (25% of total GCSE)
