GCSE Classical Civilisation
This course is entirely in English.
The Classical Civilisation course builds on the Classics work that you have done in Years 8 and 9.
The course concentrates on Ancient Greek literature (in English) and Roman archaeology and history.
There are four topics to be studied over the course:
- City life in the Classical World (everyday life in Athens or Rome)
-
Epic and Myth (Homer's Odyssey)
-
Community Life in the Classical World (Pompeii)
-
Culture and Society in the Classical World (Sophocles' Antigone)
Three of the topics are examined in a written paper at the end of Year 11, and the fourth topic is examined by controlled assessment in the autumn of Year 11.
The topics covered involve a lot of reading literature written over two thousand years ago, so candidates must have a high level of literacy.
The archaeological topics require candidates to have a good visual memory and of course an interest in ancient artefacts.
