There are three levels: cimg5508.jpg

  • Bronze for 14 & over
  • Silver for 15 & over
  • Gold for 16 & over

Pupils may either progress through all three levels or begin at Silver according to age. Expeditions are organised and assessed by teachers with the appropriate qualifications and experience. Each level involves:

Community Service to:

  • to encourage service to others. E.g. help out in a charity shop, old peoples home, helping children with special needs. Hospital work

A Skill :

  • Learning to play an instrument, chess, young enterprise are only a few to mention

A Physical Recreation :

  • Any sports, if you play in a school team, the matches that you play are in your own time so these can count towards your award

An Expedition :

  • You will be taking part in a practice expedition and a qualifying expedition. At each level the length of these expeditions are different. The training and preparation will be done in lunchtime sessions

This all sounds a lot to do but you have a year to complete the requirements. You can make it great fun, especially the expeditions, and at the end you have a certificate recognised all over the world which tells people that you can organise your time, stick to a course, be part of a team and have a liking for adventure.

Gold Award Presentation St James’s Palace 2007

I had the great pleasure to be asked to be one of the Marshals for the Gold Award Presentation at St. James’s Palace.  We had 8 candidates who gained their Gold Award.  These were Rebecca Armstrong, James Boon, Jonathan Hulse, Sian Moran and Simon Redmond. James Coates and Andrew Mowat could not make it on the day and Patricia Morley received her award the day before.
The presentation was in the Picture Gallery which was a wonderful setting. I had the privilege of meeting the Earl of Wessex, and of seeing a number of the State Apartments.

To be there with the candidates from St. Mary’s College was the highlight of the day as I was a member of the team when they were out in the atrocious weather conditions that they endured on their qualifying expedition, which makes me very proud of each of them.  They showed the courage that it takes to keep on going and not to give in when the going gets tough, and it did get tough for them.  It is one of the expeditions that I will never forget and to be with them right to the end, seeing them getting their well-deserved award makes it very special to me.
