The CCF is a voluntary youth organisation sponsored by HM forces. The St. Mary's unit has two sections and parades after school on Mondays:

Pupils may join on entering the Third Year. Whilst each section has its own programme of service training, most of the activities throughout the year are done as a joint enterprise with all cadets welcome to take part.  The main emphasis is on developing qualities of leadership, team building and discipline.

The following opportunities are available within the CCF:

• Adventure Training (e.g. climbing & abseiling in the Lake District)
• Air Experience Flying (at RAF Woodvale)
• Gliding Courses and Flying Scholarships
• Leadership Courses (including UKLF national courses)
• Shooting Courses (e.g. Altcar Ranges)
• Camps (combining training and outdoor pursuits)
• Parachuting
