GCSE Classics
GCSE CLASSICAL CIVILISATION The Classical Civilisation course is a continuation of the Classical Studies offered in Years 8 and 9. The emphasis will be on Greek and Roman life and civilisation with particular study of topics such as Roman Gladiators, Chariot Racing, the Olympic Games and Roman Theatre. There will also be study in translation of some of the literature of Greece and Rome, e.g. the Odyssey, Iliad (the story of Troy) and Greek drama.
The course aims to interest students in how the ancient Romans and Greeks lived, and how and why they reacted to other peoples. As in Years 8 and 9, much of the information will be taken from pictures, photographs, inscriptions and ancient writing translated into English. Mainly though the course aims to show the differences and similarities between ancient Greece and our own times and to show how the Greeks and Romans and their way of life have influenced us.
Four separate topics are chosen for the final written examination. There will be no coursework in this subject but work completed in class may count towards the final GCSE examination. Past students of Classical Civilisation have progressed to study Classics or Archaeology-based courses at university.
GCSE Classical Civilisation does not require any study of the Latin or Greek Languages. All material studied is translated into English.
