St Mary's CCF Army Cadets - Commemorate Arnhem

_dsc0239.jpgOn On the 16th September 2009 eleven Army Cadets, Lt Col Rothnie, Cpt Overend, 2Lt Abbott and SSI Herriott attended the 65th Commemeration of Operation Market Garden at Arnhem.

They were accomodated at Harskamp, Dutch Army Barracks. They attended several official events, such as the Parachute drop of some 600 men at Ginkel Heath one of the drop zones used during the II World War, the cocktail party held at the Airbourne Museum Oosterbeek, were they waited on, such dignatries as the Secretary of State for Defence and the British Amassador to the Netherlands and the final and most important event The Commemoration Service at the Common Wealth War Cemetary at Oosterbeek, Arnhem.

The above pictures show Veterans with their standards leaving the monument.

The local children who are asked to adopt several graves to look after over a period of two years, which involves them doing the general maintenance such as watering and weeding. They are seen holding up the flowers that they have brought to place on the graves.

The last photograph shows our cadets around the grave of Corporal M.F. O'Shaughnessy a former pupil at the school who died on 25th September 1944 aged 27.
