Careers News

Introduction

Careers education and guidance aims to prepare young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult and working life. It equips them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes for managing their lifelong progress in learning and work.

Principles

Teachers involved in careers education and guidance have a responsibility to act within an explicit ethical framework which promotes equality of opportunity and puts the needs of young people first. Teachers also need to work in partnership with parents and carers, guidance and support agencies and providers of opportunities in education, training and work.

Staffing

Careers education and guidance is a whole school issue: Mr. P McColgan is the Careers Advice Co-ordinator but all staff contribute to the programme in some way. Subject teachers are encouraged to include information about career opportunities in their lessons; form tutors provide help as required and Mr. Magill and the sixth form tutors provide much support and advice to sixth form students. ISCO play a major role in supporting advice given to all pupils and their parents. Mrs. Howard aids with the display of careers material in the Learning Resource Centre and helps to maintain an up to date supply of material.

Location

The Careers Room and Office have now moved to much more central location in rooms D8 and D10 next to the Library

There is ample space for Careers information, including University Prospectuses and Careers information on a wide range of subjects, and a pleasant area for personal research.

Four computers are available for exploring careers online and a printer for making a permanent copy of your findings.  Connexions leaflets are available to download for most of the popular university courses / careers on the College 'S' drive.  To search the Connexions website direct please click on the link and search for your chosen course / career in the search box: http://www.connexions-gmerseyside.co.uk/workforce/

The Careers Room is available to all students who wish to explore careers in general or in particular.

Careers Conference 2012

There was a real buzz in the atmosphere recently when we held our sixth Annual Careers Conference.  The evening gave students the opportunity to consult with representitives from universities and other professionals in their respective fields.  Many of the professionals have links with the College, some being parents and a good number being past pupils.
