Cricket: 1st XI off to perfect start
St. Mary's got off to the perfect start to the season on Bank Holiday Monday with a win over Ormskirk Cricket Club Senior's 2nd XI. Bowling first, captain Charles Gallagher made early inroads and at one point, Ormskirk were 31-4. He ended up with 5-16 and was ably supported by Gavin Griffiths (2-18), Joe Reade (1-18) and Jack Morris Holland (1-12). Chasing 120, St.Mary's got off to a steady start with Ben Sloan on debut (10), Charles Gallagher 27 and Jack Morris Holland 15 all contributing well. However, at 73-7, Ormskirk seemed favourites. Joe Reade and Gavin Griffiths came together to add 32 for the eighth wicket. Joe scored a vital twelve before falling LBW. This left the Griffiths brothers to finish the job with an unbroken stand of 16 with Gavin 20* ably supported by younger brother Owen. Well done to all.
