Year 7 Cricket Team Off To Winning Start

St Mary’s Y7 cricket team started the season with a win in a friendly match against Formby Cricket Club Under 12.
Conditions were more appropriate to winter sports but the threatened rain didn’t make an appearance and the game went ahead. This was the first match of the season for both St Mary’s and Formby so a bit of rustiness was to be expected and extras were expected to play a part in the outcome. Indeed this was many of the bot’s first competitive match.
Formby batted first and scored 39 runs from their 20 overs for the loss of 5 wickets with one batsman retiring. Opening batsman Matthew Black retired on 11 after 15 overs to give some of the other batsmen a chance. Harry Woods, Matthew Travers, Adam Purcell and Elliot Amadi took wickets for St Mary’s, with another batsman hitting his own wickets off the bowling of captain Daniel McCann. The St Mary’s fielding was excellent with no gaps for the batsmen to find. Cameron Collins and Owen Travis shared wicket-keeping duties and kept the batsmen on their toes and Owen Henry and Harry Woods both took great catches.
Daniel McCann and Matthew Travers opened the batting for St Mary’s, Daniel scoring a single off the first ball to get the innings underway. Matthew was bowled and then Daniel caught and bowled with 6 runs scored. Cameron Lawrenson and Harry Woods added runs, Harry finishing as top scorer with 10. A middle order collapse left St Mary’s with a lot to do but Formby’s bowlers were conceding a number of extras so if St Mary’s could find a batting partnership who could stay at the crease the match was still up for grabs.
Adam Purcell and Elliott Amadi provided that partnership. Adam scored 8 not out and Elliot scored 2 but they occupied the crease for a crucial period in the game. St Mary’s entered the last over with 4 runs needed. The running between the wickets was excellent and singles off the first two balls left St Mary’s in sight of victory. Elliot hit the third ball of the over for two runs and the crowd went wild.
The game was played in a great spirit and was enjoyed by both sides. St Mary’s now look ahead to the first competitive match of the season, away at Liverpool College in the cup next Saturday.
