Rugby Report by Dalitso Mwandumba - Year 9
Saints were victorious in a tight encounter to see them progress to the second round of the Lancashire Cup and the Daily Mail Cup. They outplayed one of the best teams in the country in nearly every department to cause a huge upset.
Saints took the lead through a well worked try from Sean Marren after a positive start and they continued to dominate throughout the game. Unfortunately, Gavin Griffiths could not convert the try from a tough kick out by the touchline but Saints were still in a strong position.
Kirkham hit back with a try of their own due to some good work from their forwards but this defensive lapse only strengthened Saints.
Saints kept applying the pressure and the defence of Kirkham finally cracked when Sean broke the line to dive for his second try that was converted easily by Gavin Griffiths.
Saints continued to dominate the game in the second half while their defence was withstanding everything Kirkham could throw at them.
Saints managed to get another try from Gavin Griffiths and this changed the match.
Kirkham did pull a try back to set up a tight finish but the defence of Saints held on for an inspirational and well deserved victory. The final score was 19-15 to Saints.
